Is Mobility Important?

We talk a lot about strength and cardiovascular fitness when it comes to staying healthy as we age, but mobility is a critical part of the picture too.

I did 30 minutes of Yoga today and it was a brilliant wake up call for me, I even had a go with a weighted hula-hoop! That was not easy!!

For flexibility you don’t necessarily need to able to touch your toes or achieve extreme ranges of movement, but simply retaining the ability to move comfortably and confidently through everyday life.

Walking, bending, lifting, reaching and getting up from the floor. Things we probably don’t think much about when they come easily, but all of this becomes much harder, much sooner than you might first think.

Modern life also means many of us spend a fair amount of time sitting at a desk, in the car or in front of a screen, so finding small ways to keep moving through different ranges feels increasingly worthwhile. That might be some stretching or mobility work, but it can also be much simpler, like walking, rotating, balancing, getting down onto the floor, or just moving the body in ways we don’t always encounter during a normal day.

The goal isn’t to become hyper-flexible. It’s to remain capable and mobile.

When we talk about longevity, there’s 3 things that I think are critical…

✅ Physical Strength

✅ Cardiovascular Fitness

✅ Flexibility

It would be a shame to be as strong as an ox, and able to play sport with your grandkids if you cant put your own socks on!
