Cardiovascular Fitness

Cardiovascular fitness underpins almost every aspect of health.
Aerobic fitness is one of the strongest predictors of long-term health outcomes and mortality, yet many people only think about “cardio” in the context of weight loss.
The heart, lungs and vascular system were designed to work regularly and for long periods. Humans by their very nature are hunter gatherers, and at least some of the hunting strategies were perisyence hunting, where you chased your prey over hours until it collapsed.
Needless to say, nippin'
to the shops doesn't really replicate this so we need to do activities to mirror the exertion:
🚶 Walking
🚴♂️ Cycling.
🏊♀️ Swimming.
🏃 Running....
Brisk daily movement!
It doesn’t need to be extreme to be effective, but it does need to be consistent.
We know that consistent cardiovascular exercise is clinically proven to improve:
✅ Heart health
✅ Blood pressure
✅ Energy levels
✅ Sleep quality
✅ Stress regulation
✅ Brain performance
✅ Metabolic health
But there is also something 'psychological' about cardio, as it builds resilience.
The ability to tolerate discomfort, to recover, and to regulate stress more effectively. It enables us to create mental clarity in our increasingly busy lives.
Modern lifestyles have engineered movement out of our days with cars replacing walking, screens replacing activity and convenience replacing effort.
The consequences are pretty significant, and not just in physical decline, but in reduced physiological capacity too.
The great news though, is that the improvement happens pretty quickly, once you start moving consistently. Endorphins make you enjoy the exercise, you start to feel better and fitter, and before you know it your body starts to crave the exercise and the next exercise hit. It creates a positive cycle of 'feel good'. Like interest in the bank, those small steps compound.
The goal here isn’t about perfection.
It’s about building a body and cardiovascular system capable of tolerating everything you throw at it, and supporting the life you want to live
