What are the symptoms of high blood pressure?
NONE…
That is exactly why hypertension (high blood pressure) is known as the “silent killer.”
Every time your heart beats, it pushes blood through your vascular system. When that pressure is consistently too high, it exerts physical stress on the delicate inner lining of your blood vessels (the endothelium).
This long term high pressure causes microscopic damage and inflammation along the artery walls. With the lining compromised, cholesterol in your blood stream can easily slip inside the arterial wall and get trapped. Over time, this builds up into a plaque (atherosclerosis). Your once flexible arteries become stiff, narrow, and rigid.
Your heart is then forced to pump much harder against this increased resistance whilst the restricted blood flow deprives your organs of oxygen, significantly driving up your risk of major health problems like strokes, heart attacks, kidney disease, and dementia.
By the time physical symptoms actually appear, the cardiovascular damage is often severe. That is why checking your blood pressure regularly is essential as it allows us to catch the problem years before it causes a significant problem.
The good news is that small lifestyle changes make a massive difference in lowering your pressure and protecting your vascular system:
📉 Reduce salt: Too much salt forces your blood vessels to hold onto excess fluid, directly increasing the volume and pressure inside your arteries.
🏃♂️ Move more: Cardiovascular exercise makes your heart pump more efficiently and improves the elasticity of your blood vessels.
⚖️ Lose excess weight: Carrying extra weight forces your heart to work harder to supply oxygen to your tissues and losing even 5% of your body weight significantly reduces this strain.
🥗 Eat whole foods: A diet rich in plants and fibre (and low in ultra-processed foods) reduces systemic inflammation and improves your metabolic health.
🍷 Cut back on alcohol: Regular, heavy drinking overstimulates your nervous system and raises blood pressure over time.
😴 Prioritise sleep: Chronic stress and poor sleep keep your body flooded with stress hormones (like cortisol and adrenaline), keeping your blood vessels constantly constricted.
When was the last time you checked your numbers?
A two-minute check could save your life.
