What is the single best thing for your health?

As a doctor, I’m often asked for the single best thing you can do for your health.

My answer usually surprises people.

If I had to choose one place for most people to start improving their health, it would be sleep 😴.

Not because it is the only thing that matters, but because it’s the foundation that holds everything else up.

Sleep is a biological force multiplier, and when you sleep well, your healthy habits get easier.

When you are chronically sleep-deprived, every other healthy choice becomes an uphill battle and feels 10x harder.

Better sleep can lead to:

✅ Better food choices:

As we discussed this week, quality sleep keeps appetite hormones balanced and insulin sensitivity stable, making you less likely to suffer intense sugar cravings.

✅ More energy:

Proper rest restores your central nervous system, giving you the actual physical and mental drive to stay active.

✅ Improved recovery:

Whether you are recovering from a stressful day at work, a tough workout, or just the difficulties of daily life, sleep is when your body does its most critical repair work for your body and for your brain.

You can try to out-train or out-diet poor sleep, but eventually, your physiology will catch up with you, and you’ll start to fail.

So before you completely change your diet or commit to a new workout schedule, start with the basics.

Get your sleep right, and see how it positively impacts everything else.
